Tackling Twitter

Image
Twitter is by far one of my favorite social media apps. When I first downloaded it, I had no clue how to use the app. Over time, I figured it out and slowly became addicted. Twitter is a literal wormhole. I can be stuck on the app forever laughing at the most random tweets. Most of the time, the tweets aren't from people I follow. As long as it gives me a good laugh or smile, I don't bother to notice who tweeted it. This chapter taught me that Twitter has a great presence for marketing. Apparently, people are more inclined to follow brands on Twitter versus on Facebook. I have never seen Twitter as a marketing tool. Most of college athletic recruiting is done on Twitter, which was the reason I joined Twitter. My feed is filled with player highlights, score updates and sports news. I rarely see ads. Twitter also poses questions in your feed asking if you have seen a specific brand's ad in the last week. Do brands have to pay for Twitter to make those questions for them?  Twi

OACs at Otterbein

Image
Happy OAC conference tournament week! I am so excited for my team to be in the position we are in going into the conference tournament. This season has been nothing short of easy. We have battled every obstacle thrown at us this season such as Covid-19, injuries and of course, exhaustion. Our team wants to win this tournament so bad. A championship is right in front of our hands, but it is going to be a fight each night. Last night, we traveled to Otterbein to take on the cardinals in a quarter-final matchup. We knew this was going to be a total battle. Otterbein had a pretty successful season. They upset John Carroll at the end of the year and stole a win from us. This was only the second time we were playing Otterbein. The first game was canceled due to us having 13 girls sick with Covid-19. From the start, our team was ready to play. We were extremely disappointed in our efforts in the first game, which made us fight even harder. The referees didn't call too many fouls, but I di

Is Instagram Really Listening to Us?

Image
Instagram is a social media platform that I am far more familiar with compared to Facebook. I opened my Instagram account when I was in middle school, but I am inconsistent with my posts. Some months I will post two or three times, and then I can go two or three months without posting anything. Instagram has a lot of pressure around it to post a photoshopped selfie with two filters on it got, and all I could think was who cares? Aside from Instagram's abundant number of influencers and stars, it works with an algorithm. In the past, Instagram used to fill users' feeds with content based on the time and day it was posted. Now it fills your feed based on six factors: the interest of users, the timing of the post, the interaction of user to the account, how frequently the app is opened, followed accounts, and how long the user spends on Instagram. My family and I have this joke that our phones are listening to us. I have countless examples of us talking about a certain topic or pr

Girls Weekend in G Town

Image
This weekend, I got the joy of traveling down to Germantown, Ohio with my friend Abby. It took us forever to decide we were going to make the trip, but I am so glad that we went. Germantown is close to two hours away from ONU. After our game at John Carroll, which was in Cleveland, we packed our bags fast and were on the road again.  Abby and I stayed at her childhood home, but we weren't there much the next day. We started the day by going to her church. The church is absolutely beautiful, and I was lucky to meet a lot of very important people in her life. After church, we went to her boyfriend's house for lunch. His mom is an amazing cook! Abby had a zoom call in the afternoon so we didn't stay too long. During her zoom call, I was supposed to be doing my homework, but I took a nap instead. Abby's aunt is moving out of her apartment and needed help carrying cardboard boxes from U-Haul so we headed over to help in the afternoon. Abby is not a coffee fan, but she insist

False News Facebook

Image
Facebook is a tool of social media that I am largely unfamiliar with using. I always perceived Facebook as a platform for adults, which is true. When sporting events were moved to live films only, I downloaded Facebook, but I don't remember using it more than once. When we did our social media audits, I went in and deleted my account.  My grandparents asked me about how I can tell where to buy stuff online. Apparently, my nana has been clicking on any Facebook adds she likes and ordering items. In the process, she got her card information stolen. My grandparents are in their late 70s so they have no clue how to tell the fake websites from the real ones. As long as they see a logo in the corner, they assume the account is legit. I hate how many people are taken advantage of through internet adds.  This chapter referenced the effort Facebook is making to rid their pages of false advertisements and news. At the start of the pandemic, people were posting whatever they wanted to about C

Best Friends Since Birth

Image
When I moved away to college, I was determined that I was never going to visit home. Often, I talked about how much I could not wait to leave. I am an independent person 99% of the time. That 1% of the time, I lean on my best friend, my twin brother. It wasn't an entire week at school before I caught myself picking up the phone to Facetime Hunter and tell him every ounce of my day.  I was prompted to write about my twin brother because he called me to come home this weekend. Hunter is taking all online classes this semester. While this may seem like the great life, it is a mess. Hunter is not the most organized person. I inhabited that trait, which is why I spent my entire Sunday writing three different color coordinated calendars based on all his syllabi. Of course, Hunter sat on the couch taking a nap for moral support. I did receive a hug and a thank you afterwards. I guess that made up for the cramp in my hand from writing so much. Many people ask me what it is like to have a t

Just Add it to the Calendar

The majority of society interacts with some form of social media at least once a day. During our first social media class, Dr. Aggie made us look up our social media usage. I am quite embarrassed to say I use social media over 2 hours a day. That is 14 hours a week, 56 hours a month and 672 hours a year. How do social media managers or influencers survive their careers? Chapter 3 teaches us how effective social media calendars and schedules help in maintaining a strong personal brand. Content calendars include important dates such as holidays or promotions so content can be created accordingly. In addition, content calendars can help plan when videos, blogs, and brand deals are going to be posted. Most content creators are dealing with a wide variety of apps to push their company content to viewers. I cannot imagine how overwhelming this can become, especially when social media managers are focusing on other factors such as content quality, shares, public response and impact for the co

We EnCANTo Focus

Image
Disney+ released a movie called "Encanto" a few months ago. While most of you have probably seen it, I live under a rock and have neglected satisfying my inner child by watching it. My teammate, Abby Dickson, was determined to have me watch this movie with her. We tried to watch the movie last Sunday night, but as college students, we procrastinated all our homework. This left approximately no time to spend watching a movie. We decided to try again this weekend. Abby and I made sure to remind each other to not procrastinate homework. I even put a reminder in my phone to be on top of everything. To our surprise, we were only 13 minutes late to our planned movie time.  Now this is the part where you would think we just watched the movie straight through like normal people, but that was not the case. We were unexpectedly visited by our good friend Ammryn, who was beyond excited about her resident assistant interviews. Aside from Ammryn's visit, my roommate came back to unloa
