PR in Pittsburgh
I had the opportunity to travel to Pittsburgh for a PRSSA firms trip. Honestly, I was extremely hesitant about going on the trip, but I am so glad that I went on it. I started my day by waking up at 4:45 a.m. to go to voluntary conditioning. At 6:45 a.m., I left voluntary conditioning to shower. This was probably the fastest shower I have ever taken because I wanted to ensure that I had time to do my hair. We loaded the bus around 8:40 a.m. and were off on an adventure. The bus was silent for a great portion of the ride. Thankfully, we stopped at a gas station where we all grabbed some form of caffeine, and the rest of the ride went by in a blink of an eye.
My favorite part of the weekend was the firms' tours. As a freshman, the world of public relations is very new. I didn't know the difference between agency and corporate companies until I listened to the speakers. We toured a smaller agency, Red Havas, and a global agency, Burson Cohn and Wolfe. I used to believe that I wanted to work for a corporate company, but I might have changed my mind. I enjoyed learning about how agencies work with a vast variety of clients. This keeps work interesting and avoids working for the same company all the time. On Saturday, I listened to speakers talk about how it is okay to switch between all types of companies. They emphasized by switching through companies, you find which type fits the best with how you work. I appreciated their openness on the topic because I feel a great deal of pressure to stay in one place.
Aside from all the information I learned, I enjoyed being around people who genuinely cared about us. The main commonality between everyone was public relations, but the speakers wanted to know more. They asked me what makes me different and my life background. In addition, they shared incredible life stories. No story was the same either. The journey to their goal was not a straight path, but that path taught them more than the original plan would have taught them.
I hope that we attend more spring PRSSA conferences while I am at ONU. I loved learning more about the business while making memories that will last me a lifetime.
That's so cool that you had the opportunity to travel to Pittsburgh for the PRSSA trip! I can't believe you woke up at 4:45 a.m., I thought waking up at 5:30 a.m. for my meet was bad haha. It seems like you had such a fun time and gained valuable lessons from attending. I'm planning on joining PRSSA because it is a part of my double major :)
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool that you went to Pittsburgh for the PRSSA trip. Is the conference always in Pittsburgh or is it a new place every year. And is the trip the same time every year because if not I would be interested to go.
