Is Social Media Really Good for Companies?

Social media runs almost every aspect of our lives. I rarely walk past someone that is not on their phone. People do not seem to care that they are driving on the road if it means they can check a snapchat or a comment on their post. Social media has even taken over the business world. The problem is determining whether or not that is good for companies.

Social media may seem like the next big thing, but it is causing a ton of issues in the business industry. Navigating social media is not an easy task to handle. Michelle Charello made note that a lot of experienced businessmen and women are lost when it comes to social media. This makes it even harder for companies to hire quality workers who were well rounded in their field of interest. In addition social media requires around the clock monitoring. Companies are creating new positions that focus only on social media. The negative feedback learned from social media can take companies off-guard and cause issues that were not there to start.

On the flip side social media has made the business world easily accessible. Social media platforms help businesses reach out to its target audiences directly. It encourages two-way communication that allows for improvement according to Michelle Charello. Companies were using radio commercials, tv ads or billboards to promote products. Now companies can make an online post so millions of people can view it within seconds. The best part of social media is that it is free to use. Social media enhanced competition across all businesses.

Social media is a new tool that can make or break companies in the business world. Companies need to assess how beneficial social media is to its success right now. The scary fact for some companies is that the choice might not be there for long. Do you think the benefits of social media are worth the costs?

  1. I agree about the dangers of social media. Someone almost hit me on campus because they were driving and on Instagram.
